A Brief History

In 1924, Mr & Mrs Eric Reed, established a four-hole golf course on their property on the western side of the Exeter Main Road, opposite what is now the site of the Exeter High School. It was then known as the Tresca Golf Club. The course was extended to 6 holes in 1952 and 9 holes in 1953 by then owner Mr Green and the name changed to the Exeter Golf Club.

The clubhouse was first built in 1968, extended in 1983 and again in 1993. A massive working bee on the course involving 80 community members and farm equipment in 1968 and another in 2003, which included the installation of automatic sprinklers on the fairways and greens, set the Club up as a must play course for members and visitors.

Today

A dedicated team of volunteers, under the direction of Course Superintendent, Warren West, ensures the Exeter Golf Club is recognised throughout the state for its appearance, greens and layout as evidenced by Google reviews such as these:

“Incredible hidden gem. Me and my mate travelling through Tasmania had an amazing round here. Conditions were immaculate! A special thanks to Sue for the memento ball as we are from Exeter back in the UK and the friendly groundskeeper!” Jamie Smith

“Hidden surprise! I was blown away at how well kept this little country course is! Great greens, lush fairways (in December!) Challenging course design with heaps of elevation and dog legs to contend with. Very impressive and worth the green fees. We will swing by here again sometime. Thoroughly enjoyed.” Alex Grey

“Amazingly well-kept course. It's a bit of a workout ups some hills, but really beautiful standard.” Brad Wright

“This has been my favourite course in Tasmania so far. The views and nature are lovely.” Hellen L

"A beautiful little nine-hole course in a stunning part of Tasmania. The fairways were in great condition and the welcome from members couldn't have been warmer." Mark T.

"Such a friendly club. We dropped in as visitors and were treated like locals. Scenic, well-kept and a real hidden gem in the Tamar Valley." Sarah L.

"Wonderful country golf with 18 alternate tees making it feel like a full round. Great value green fees and the clubhouse has a lovely community feel." Andrew P.

"One of the most welcoming clubs we've played at in Tasmania. Affordable, picturesque and run by people who clearly love the place." David M.

"One of the most underrated courses in Tassie" Lucas C.

EGC is scenic & tranquil with beautiful surroundings and well-maintained fairways and greens.

Membership of the Club currently stands at 160, an increase of over 30 in the past 12 months and includes:

The Exeter Golf Club members are enjoying great recent success against other similar sized clubs. The Club recently retained in 2026, both the Boags Cup (Exeter vs Deloraine vs Thirlstane vs Sheffield) and EGG Cup (Exeter vs Greens Beach vs Georgetown). A great team effort by our members who represented the Club with distinction.

Over the years, our members have achieved success for themselves and our Club in Country Week, pennants, NTVA events, other Club’s competitions and State Championships along with four players who became professional golfers.

We have Dress Code and Course Care and Etiquette policies and on-course Rangers to ensure compliance with these policies and payment of green fees.

Our Board of Directors feature seven individuals from varied backgrounds with respective skills in management, finance, marketing, health and safety, sponsorship and publicity. The Club is superbly led by our President Gary McLennan, Captain Sue Clark and Treasurer Wendy Cuthbertson who are highly regarded by the local community and our members.

Financially, the Club has been very stable for many years thanks to a number of factors. We do not have any paid employees and benefit from the support we get from local businesses, sponsors, members, the occasional grant, bar takings, green fees and annual membership fees. Our long time Treasurer is very astute and has proven to be an excellent manager of the Club’s finances. Our books are audited each year to ensure compliance to regulatory requirements. To keep our course fairways and greens up to a high standard, our biggest expense is machinery, fuel and lubricant costs that are ever increasing each year.

In closing, the Board of Directors and our members enthusiastically recommend that Exeter Golf Club be considered for the Sports Club of the Year – Regional 2026 Award.
